For Deaf and Hard of Hearing newcomers to Canada, learning American Sign Language (ASL) is essential to acquiring new vocabulary and to settling into the community with confidence and a sense of belonging. In Vancouver, a free program is making that journey more accessible and empowering than ever.
Through the ASL LINC program at Immigrant Services Society of BC, Deaf and Hard of Hearing permanent residents can learn ASL for free while strengthening their English reading and writing skills, all in a safe, culturally supportive environment designed for them.
“Learning in an accessible, safe, and supportive environment has made a big difference in my life. I now feel more confident, improved my conversations, and I can communicate better in everyday situations. Without this support, learning would be much more difficult. I confidently recommend this class to others.” — Zahra, ASL LINC student
