Summer hearing aid care tips

by | Jul 9, 2026 | Hearing Aids

Summer means more time outdoors, travel, concerts, and family activities, but heat, humidity, water, sunscreen, and loud events can all affect your hearing and hearing aids. Follow these simple tips to protect your hearing all season long.

Keep your hearing aids dry

Heat, humidity, and sweat can impact hearing aid performance. After wearing your hearing aids:

  • Wipe them with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Check for moisture around the microphones and battery compartment.
  • Use a hearing aid drying system if needed.

If your hearing aids sound distorted or stop working, contact your hearing care provider.

Remove hearing aids before water activities

Take your hearing aids out before swimming, showering, or other water activities unless your provider has confirmed they’re waterproof. Store them in a protective case, not loose in a towel, pocket, or beach bag. If they get wet, avoid using direct heat to dry them. Contact your hearing care provider for guidance.

Apply sunscreen before your hearing aids

Lotions and sprays can clog microphones and controls. A simple rule: Apply first. Hearing aids second.

  • Remove your hearing aids before applying sunscreen or bug spray.
  • Wash or dry your hands.
  • Let products absorb before putting your hearing aids back on.

Protect hearing aids from heat

Never leave hearing aids in hot places like parked cars or direct sunlight. When travelling, pack your charger, batteries, cleaning supplies, and drying system together so you’re prepared wherever summer takes you.

Book a hearing test

If you’ve noticed ringing in your ears, muffled hearing, or difficulty following conversations after summer activities, don’t ignore it. A hearing assessment can identify changes early and help you find the right support.
