On Friday, October 2, Wavefront Centre’s Better at Home program welcomed Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing clients to the Honeybee Centre in Surrey to celebrate International Day of Older Persons, observed on October 1.
The outing brought people together for a day of discovery, conversation and shared experiences.
Exploring the world of pollinators
With support from ASL interpreters and Tactile ASL intervenors, participants explored the intricate world of pollinators through accessible storytelling and hands-on props. Everyone had opportunities to engage, ask questions and learn more about bees.
A highlight of the day was tasting different varieties of honey, including the farm’s seasonal Blueberry Blossom honey, and experiencing the rich aroma of fresh beeswax.
Later in the afternoon, participants enjoyed snacks and honey-infused tea while sharing memories of bees and encounters with wasps during their youth.
The celebration concluded with a beeline to the store for—you guessed it—more honey, along with beeswax candles, soaps and other keepsakes.
As participants said farewell to friends, they left with the sweetness of shared experiences and community connection. Our thanks to the Honeybee Centre for providing an accessible and enjoyable visit for our Better at Home clients.
